Happy Spring Everyone!
I’ve always loved spring. Maybe because I’m a spring baby. Sometimes the beginning of spring isn’t as enjoyable because of all the messy melt (which in my case includes DOG POOP EVERYWHERE!), but the fact that the days are getting longer and warmer kind of help make up for it. These last few days in Edmonton have actually been a bit gloomy, but we had a nice stretch of sun for a week before that. I also love the spring means the return of plants and wildlife. I’ve heard some geese making their way back north and even saw my first spider of the season! Literally on the ceiling above my bed, but I relocated it to the garage.
Now that spring is here I am feeling the need to nourish my body, spirit, and mind and shift out of what has been a pretty dreary winter into a vibrant spring and summer. This past winter I felt super lazy, unmotivated, and unhealthy. I know this is mainly because of a major change that took place in my diet.
For those of you who know my story, since September of 2016 my diet was primarily Organic Whole Foods, however, just before Christmas I decided I wanted to partake in my favourite Christmas foods as I hadn’t done for 2 years. I knew if I made more of a gradual transition in my diet before Christmas my chances of feeling gross after indulging would be minimal and I was right. I gradually added more “foods” of the Standard American Diet variety before Christmas and enjoyed anything and everything I wanted and managed to feel alright with the help of some healthy dietary habits and supplements.
Since Christmas, however, I have continued the Standard American Diet and have really been skimping on my Organic Whole Foods and the negative effects have become quite evident. I’ve noticed the return of symptoms that where either gone or greatly reduced when my diet consisted primarily of Organic Whole Foods.
These are just some of the changes I have noticed over the past few months of having returned to a Standard American Diet:
I can feel the increased inflammation and pain throughout my whole body, but especially my joints. Aches, pains, snaps, crackles, and pops!
Increased PMS symptoms including mood swings, breast tenderness, and Advil-worthy cramps which before were practically non-existent.
Increased cystic acne breakouts.
Bowel Movements (yes, EVERYBODY POOPS!) used to be of a perfect consistency and were like clockwork. My guts had the Goldilocks life and now it’s all “too soft” or “too hard” and “too much” or “too little” and more general discomfort.
Increased feelings of Anxiety/Depression. I now know there truly is a strong connection between our gut health and our mind. Out of the blue one day I felt feelings of depression that I had not experienced for a long time. After investigating I came to realize for the past couple of days I was experiencing IBS attacks and generally shitty gut health. Once my guts were out of the war zone my mood felt much better. I love it when we get those “Ah Ha!” moments with our health!
Weight Gain! Now while I was actually trying to gain some weight anyway, I ended up overshooting it a bit. Not by a lot, but my pants are feeling a bit tighter than desired around the gut and that isn’t the best for gut health either keeping things too tight for comfort there.
My taste buds are all out of whack and don’t know what they want anymore. I try to tune in to my body and get a feel for what it craves, but it’s like there is something blocked there and the messages can’t get through.
I’ve reached the “enough is enough” point and I’m ready for a positive shift. I wouldn’t say I’m ready to spring into it right away (pun intended), but I’m ready to start building some daily and weekly healthy habits so that I can gradually get there without feeling overwhelmed. This “on again, off again” relationship with my health is becoming very tiring all around and I want to start honouring my body, spirit, and mind on a daily basis. It’s time to fling the Yo-Yo away. (I was never very good with Yo-Yo’s anyway)
This idea of having a healthy lifestyle that is achievable and sustainable by incorporating daily healthy habits in a step-by-step way is something a group of my colleagues and like-minded ladies were discussing as we are all feeling like we’re in the same boat right now. So we decided to come together with all of our knowledge and experience of similar and different backgrounds and create the Daily Healthy Habits Group Program!
We wanted to make it a Group Program so that we could all do it together, but also invite others to join in so that we can all share and experience the shift to a healthier lifestyle together for added support and group accountability.
